Beaujolais Facts
Beaujolais
Facts
Other French
Regions
| Beaujolais
Nouveau is always released the third Thursday of November, regardless of
harvest date. |
| The region
of Beaujolais is 34 miles long north to south and 7 to 9 miles wide.
|
| There are
about 4,000 grape growers in this region just north of Frances largest
city, Lyon. |
| All the
grapes in the Beaujolais region must be picked by hand. |
|
Approximately 1/3 of the entire crop of the Beaujolais region is sold as
Beaujolais Nouveau. |
| Gamay is
the only grape permitted for Beaujolais. Some California wineries label
their wine Gamay Beaujolais which is not the same grape grown in
France. |
| Beaujolais
Nouveau cannot be made from grapes grown in the 10 crus (great growths)
of Beaujolaisonly from grapes coming from the appellations of
Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages. |
|
Beaujolais Nouveau owes its
easy drink-ability to a winemaking technique called carbonic (or whole
berry) maceration. This method helps preserve a fresh fruitiness without
extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins. |
| Beaujolais
Nouveau is meant to be drunk youngit should be consumed by the
following May after its release. |
| Beaujolais
Nouveau should be served slightly cool, about 55 degrees Fahrenheit at
this temperature the wine is more refreshing and more forward fruit than
served at room temperature. |
