1996 ST. FRANCIS Merlot, Sonoma Valley Reserve Here's another wine for the sensory challenged. Everything starts with a massive bouquet of smoky oak melded with sweet and seductive super ripe dark red fruit. As the wine breathes, the bouquet picks up some additional notes of herbal grassiness and vanilla. On the palate, herb laced fruit dominates the attack and, by mid palate, additional ultra ripe fruit components start to kick in. While the tannins firm up on the finish, nobody cares because of the chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch notes that hang on endlessly. An oak lover's dream, St. Francis wines are never understated and this wine certainly is not. The flavors are enormous in a style that's in your face. About $40         01/09/01          Tom
