1995 CHATEAU ST. JEAN Cabernet Sauvignon,
Cinq Cpages
Faint
aromas of dark fruit and earth emerge as dark berry and cherry flavors
on the palate. Smooth and velvety, full bodied and rich, firm
tannins accompany the fruit onto the finish. What's missing is
complexity and depth of flavor (dare we say, "simple").
How did they make the great leap forward in the next vintage...or, did
they? $28 (now, $40, if you can find it).
(I wrote this before the furor erupted
over Wine Spectator selection of the wine of the year. I don't
remember what piqued my interest, but something caused me to cough up
the $28 prior to the Wine Spectator announcement. They picked the
'96, this is the preceding vintage.) TOM
