Foley Estate Vineyards

1998 FOLEY Pinot Noir,  Santa Maria Hills Vineyard This single vineyard Pinot from William Foley III and Alan Phillips, owner and winemaker respectively, is another masterpiece. Foley, CEO of CKE Enterprises (Hardees and Carls Jr. restaurants) does this as a hobby! Things start off slowly with restrained aromatics of ripe berries and sweet oak, with nuances of herbs and menthol. But then, the aromatics are amplified on the palate, picking up additional notes of coffee and cola. Smoky oak, intertwined with very plump, ripe fruit, is evident everywhere, with elements of spice joining in on the very ample finish. Everything is delivered in a medium body that expresses sheer grace. $35.      04/26/01
