2000 PALIO VECCHIO Merlot, Napa
Valley
Here is a new project from Napa Valley's Luna Vineyards. Luna is a
Cal-Italian label that has had great success with Merlot, Sangiovese and
Pinot Grigio. Star wine-maker John Kongsgaard oversees happenings at
Luna. Palio Vecchio is made with fruit that didn't make the cut for the
regular Luna bottlings and is thusly value-priced. The 2000 Merlot
shows plenty of ripe fruit on the palate, with scents of candle wax
accompanying fruit aromas on the nose. Adequately constructed, these wines
come across as sort of plain vanilla, a bit devoid of much
personality.
