1997 CLOS PEGASE Chardonnay,
Napa Valley Carneros, Mitsuko's Vineyard, Hommage Artist Series Reserve
The
Clos gives us this top of the line Napa Valley Chard. It is huge and
forward
with the word "subtle" being most inappropriate.
Creamy vanilla, honey and
butterscotch are rampant in the bouquet, with
suggestions of fig and ripe melon.
Oh. And lots of oak. Soft and round
on the palate, more smoky oak and spice join the fruit and vanilla on a
long, lasting finish, ending on a note of burnt butter.
While the spice
cuts through the butter, too bad this monster doesn't have just a
dash
of citrus to clean it up a bit. But, no matter. They have crafted a wine
that
lives up to the prototypical California Chardonnay genre and it's
another oak lover's dream come true.
